Vintage Santo Domingo Jacla Necklace
Wow! This heavy, Santo Domingo handmade turquoise heishi necklace with jaclas is AMAZING! We guarantee you will not be disappointed in the quality of this piece. The artist has polished very large, graduating turquoise heishi discs to form the two strand necklace. The matching "jaclas" consist also of graduated turquoise heishi with three pieces each of elk teeth carved to resemble traditional “corn beads." Historically, in Santo Domingo Pueblo, a heishi necklace would have a secondary pendant, tied on with string at the bottom, called a jacla (pronounced "jaw claw.") Traditionally these would be removed (untied) from the necklace and used as matching earrings!
